lyrics

unless

everybody wants something

everybody wants something to believe
everybody wants someone who needs them
everybody needs a little rest
a little piece of what they think is best
everybody wants something to do
everybody wants something to be true
everybody wants someone to love
everybody wants something to dream of

everybody needs a little time
everybody needs somewhere to shine
everybody wants a chance to share
to show somebody that they care
everybody needs a little space
everyone’s just tryin’ to find their way
every body wants to have their dance
everyone just needs to take that chance

so take the time to be a friend
and make the space to finally mend
give someone something to believe
let someone know how much you need them

on the treeline

i think of all you’ve lived through
i think of where you have been
i think of all the mountains you’ve climbed
and if you’ll have to climb again
i think of how inspired i am to be your best friend

and the sun sets on the tree-line,
the snow melts down the mountainside
and i’m sittin’ by my best friend’s side
starin’ at a smile.
we talk about our dreams to come,
wonderin’ where they come from
and we’re holdin’ off the next day’s sun
hopin’ now will last

i know the seasons they
they will always change
i know that nothing ever
really stays the same
i know in this life there’ll be pain
but i’ll be here

and the sun sets on the tree-line,
the snow melts down the mountainside
and i’m sittin’ by my best friend’s side
starin’ at a smile.
we talk about our dreams to come,
wonderin’ where they come from
and we’re holdin’ off the next day’s sun
hopin’ now will last

dreams will come and dreams will go
but like butterflies we know
crossing paths we will grow
by taking time to dance

and the sun sets on the tree-line,
the snow melts down the mountainside
and i’m sittin’ by my best friend’s side
starin’ at a smile.
we talk about our dreams to come,
wonderin’ where they come from
and we’re holdin’ off the next day’s sun
hopin’ now will last
hopin’ now will last
hopin’ now will last

you need love

you need love
you need love
you need love
I can see
well if you need love
you don’t have to worry
cuz you’ve got love
you’ve got me

in this whole world
you’ve got a choice
to turn your back
or use your voice
so take a chance
take a stand
and spread your joy
across the land

you need love
you need love
you need love
I can see
well if you need love
you don’t have to worry
cuz you’ve got love
you’ve got me

this moment’s short
no time to think
you’ll have to jump to grow your wings
your time is now
figure it out
you’ll learn to fly on your way down

you need love
you need love
you need love
I can see
well if you need love
you don’t have to worry
cuz you’ve got love
you’ve got me

unless

he played politics
like a game of chess
he the king and so I was the queen I guess
I got sacrificed
when the time was right
so I chose to get out of that game
and every time I have to make that choice
I’m by the water and she’s singin’ my song
and I’ve got no choice but to start singing along
she sings note after
note after note
after
washes me over
unless you’re an ocean
unless you’re an oak tree
what to do if you’re just me I really don’t know
unless you’re a pirate
unless you’re a cowboy
unless you’re divine
what to do to be just fine
unless you’re you
who knows what to do
you’re the chosen one like a golden son
I’m the tag-along
I’m the vagabond
you said “get out there
make them look at you”
you said “I’ll be here
show what you can do”
and every time I have to make that choice
I’m by the water and she’s singin’ my song
and I’ve got no choice but to start singing along
she sings note after
note after note
after
washes me over
unless you’re an ocean
unless you’re an oak tree
what to do if you’re just me I really don’t know
unless you’re a pirate
unless you’re a cowboy
unless you’re divine
what to do to be just fine
unless you’re you
who knows what to do
now my dreams are all learning how to crawl
they are grinning cuz soon they’ll be
big and strong
and every time I have to make that choice
I’m by the water and she’s singin’ my song
and I’ve got no choice but to start singing along
she sings note after
note after note
after
washes me over
unless you’re an ocean
unless you’re an oak tree
what to do if you’re just me I really don’t know
unless you’re a pirate
unless you’re a cowboy
unless you’re divine
what to do to be just fine
unless you’re you
who knows what to do
now every time I have to make that choice
every time I have to make that choice
now every time you have to make that choice
choose to be you

if I were

if I were the Lorax I’d speak for the trees
if I were a seagull I’d soar in the breeze
but I’m only human and all I can be is me

if I were a willow I’d know how to weep
if I were the ocean I’d be really deep
but I’m only human and all I can be is me

and I’ve got a little voice deep in my heart
it keeps saying you’re special so, do you’re part
cuz you are just human and you’re a good place to start

if I were a sailboat I’d set out to sea
if I were a sidewalk I’d skin up your knee
but I’m only human and all I can be is me

if I were a bullfrog I’d know how to leap
if I were a teddy I’d help you to sleep
but I’m only human and all I can be is me

and I’ve got a little voice deep in my heart
it keeps saying you’re special so, do you’re part
cuz you are just human and you’re a good place to start

so though I’m not the Lorax I’ll speak for the trees
and I’m not a seagull but I’ll play in the breeze
cuz I’m only human and all I can be is me
all I can be is me
all I can be is me

love song

I wish you many sunsets
colors to inspire your love
journeys through snowy mountains
and flying on the wings of doves

everything I love about you is everything you are
you’ll find the love I’m giving tucked inside your heart

I wish you late night dancing
underneath a starry sky
a blanket full of bigger dreams
and a pillow to rest your weary eyes

everything I love about you is everything you are
you’ll find the love I’m giving tucked inside your heart

I wish you poetry
to say exactly what you mean
fireflies that keep you strong
and a river full of endless song

everything I love about you is everything you are
you’ll find the love I’m giving tucked inside your heart

long dirt road

I spent every sunday morning learning how to sing loud
every part in every octave
singing god to come down
singing love
singing power
singing peace to come
now we raise our spirits from the ground
there’s nothing like the sound
when we sing
love is
we are pilgrims
traveling down this long dirt road
I can hear my family singing
every time the wind blows
grandpa taught me what to look for just before it rains
he taught me how to recognize all the subtle changes
how to harvest
how to grow
how the earth just lets you know
now we gather up our things and gather round the moon
we call out to our saints for them to come and bless us soon
so please mommy sing it’s been a hard day
I just want to hear you say
love is
we are pilgrims
traveling down this long dirt road
I can hear my family singing
every time the wind blows
love is
we are pilgrims
traveling down this long dirt road
I can hear my family singing
every time the wind blows

midnight prairie

she had spent her whole life waiting for an open sky
the smell of grass, the wind, the clouds, the sun shining in her eyes
she’d sing
“oh the midnight prairie
the call of the wild
oh for a chance to tarry
on a sunset ride”

he was climbing mountains hoping for a chance to rest
he had felt the weight of sadness heavy on his chest
he’d sing
“oh the midnight prairie
the call of the wild
oh for a chance to tarry
on a sunset ride”

she could see his mountains
he could see her sky
and they met the day fate woke them up to watch the sunrise
they sang
“oh the midnight prairie
the call of the wild
oh for a chance to tarry
on a sunset ride”

they were born into a better ending finally side by side
straight into a brilliant sunset boldly they will ride
they’ll sing
“oh the midnight prairie
the call of the wild
oh for a chance to tarry
on a sunset ride”

I pick flowers

you speak your truth
you journey through
beneath the lights you show the world
what it means to be you
this is your gift to all who see
it’s in your passion you inspire me to be
all I can be
you’re a poet
you’re a dreamer
you’re a lover
a believer
I pick flowers sometimes
just to keep you on my mind
as you journey through the world
telling stories of the earth
of exhaustion and joy
of tragedy and birth
I pick flowers sometimes
and like a whisper you began
and now your masterpiece has grown
to become your very own
you’re a poet
you’re a dreamer
you’re a lover
a believer
I pick flowers sometimes
just to keep you on my mind
you scream
you laugh
you cry
you sing
I hope you feel
all the peace you bring
you’re a poet
you’re a dreamer
you’re a lover
a believer
I pick flowers sometimes
just to keep you on my mind
as you journey through the world
telling stories of the earth
of exhaustion and joy
of tragedy and birth
I pick flowers sometimes

tame

When the Prairie met the Ocean she said, “What do you see?
‘cause I’ve heard things about you that I think are just make believe.
I can see that you’re strong, but is that really all?
I’ve been waiting to meet you.”
“They’ve seen me get restless and lose control.
I have buried their loved ones in the depths of my soul.
I’m the tempest inside you and the terrors that bind you.
They’ve tried to tame me for years.
I have soaked in their laughter. I have swallowed their tears.
They have begged and have cursed when they’ve called me by name.
But I wish they’d not wish me tame.”
The Ocean said, “Prairie, I’ve heard of you, too.
And I think that your life is one I wish I knew.
I can see that you’re strong, but is that really all?
I’ve been waiting to meet you.”
“They’ve plowed through my treasures hoping I’d grow.
I have buried their lifetimes as they begged for control.
Without me they would have never survived.
Now they have left me barely alive.
They’ve tried to tame me for years.
My wind and my lightening are all that they fear.
I have begged and have cursed when they’ve called out my name.
But I wish they’d not wish me tame.”
”I’ve come to you broken, but I’ve come to you whole.”
“With all that I’m left with I’ve come to behold you.”
They’ve tried to tame me for years.
I have soaked in their laughter. I have swallowed their tears.
They have begged and have cursed when they’ve called me by name.
But I wish they’d not wish
I wish they’d not wish
I wish they’d not wish me
